medium: pencil, charcoal (on vellum)

This is from a few years back at the Society of Illustrators. A fellow regular at the Society's Jazz & Sketch sessions, Jim Consor, inspired me to work on this slippery surface. Jim does some beautiful charcoal drawings that resemble Grisaille oil paintings. He works on heavy duty textured tracing paper/vellum and works the charcoal like it is oil paint. I, however, couldn't find the textured vellum and got the smooth type. It it really hard to work on with charcoal because it just does not want to adhere to the surface. But it is really fun to smear around and "finger paint" with.

This is one of the best drawings I've seen in ages. If I had the money I would buy. Brilliant.
Thanks Antony.
