Sara, From the Chest Up, Looking Over Her Right Shoulder (Detail)

I've been so busy the last few months that I haven't had the time to go out to the store and stock up on supplies. I'm running low on a lot of my usual colors and I'm out of the Schminke English Red (the color I use for my skin-tones). This has forced me to experiment with colors that I usually use sparingly. The warm skin-tone in this painting was achieved by mixing Permanent Carmine (which I normally mix with Ultramarine or Cobalt Blue to get the Violets I use in the shadow areas) with Lemon Yellow (which spilled and dried all over the mixing area of my palette). I had to use up the Lemon Yellow either way, and mixing it with the Carmine made for a happy little accident that closely mimicked the English Red but with stronger intensity. It's amazing how long you can be playing with color and still be surprised. I hope to have a lot more of these happy surprises in the New Year.

A happy, healthy and surprising New Year to everyone! Thank you all for stopping by.
