It's been over a year since I've drawn Dirty Martini. She is one of the top burlesque dancers in the country and her schedule is quite busy. It was good to have her back.

The washes in this drawing got a bit messy but the line-work seems to pull everything together.

I forgot my sketchbook the day I did this. Luckily the Society was kind enough to lend me come copy paper. Back when I was a kid, just starting to take drawing seriously, I used to draw on this stuff like it was going out of style. I still use it for sketching.

Another new model, Mo (who's stage name is Faux Maux, and also lives in Astoria), modeled while quite pregnant*. This is not new to me or the Society. We had a model in late pregnancy when I first started working at the Society. What was surprising about Mo was how well she held her poses.

* EDIT: Thanks to my my friend Darcy Dahl (who used to moderate the figure drawing sessions at Haven Arts) who emailed me to tell me that Faux Maux is not actually pregnant. In her own words: "I started calling myself 'deformed' only last year. I had to explain my deformity to art classes. 'No. I'm not pregnant.' 'No, I can't do that pose.'"

This drawing is from another rowdy night at the Society from a few weeks back. This was a new model, who came dressed as a male clown along with Amber Ray as a female clown. As the night wore on they slowly disrobed. That night we were also celebrating the 18th birthday of Lynne Foster's (one of the organizers of Society's Jazz & Sketch sessions) son, Guy. During this pose, Amelia sang a great rendition of Nina Simone's Feeling Good without moving. How's that for an 18th birthday party?

This painting just magically came together. From the initial line-work (which I left loose), to the washes and the finishing touches in pastel, everything just seemed to work. It made me actually think that I know what I'm doing.

I stated drawing this pose with a pencil and although the face was coming together fine I didn't like the composition. This was my second attempt, sans pencil. It went even worse than the first. But I decided to suffer through and added the pastel while waiting for the washes to dry. This may be far from a success but there are certain shapes in the face that appeal to me.
