I'm not sure what happened with the left hand, all those messy blotches were not my doing. Maybe I used another sheet in my sketch pad on top of this sketch before the colors were fully dry.

This was painted at the Tuesday sketch session, and it was not a great night for me. Way too tired from the Daylight Savings time change and lack of sleep, everything seemed to be going poorly. This sketch would not cooperate. It wasn't until the last minute that I put in the details in the face and pulled it all together. And much to my surprise, looking at this sketch a day later, I actually like the face a lot. This goes to show that one should trust the marks one makes without over-thinking them. I got this last bit of advice from Greg Manchess a few weeks ago and he was absolutely right.

This was my second attempt at this pose. The first, started in watercolor was quickly becoming a disaster with no hopes of saving and the clock was ticking. I started over with a quick pencil sketch and a few washes thrown in in the last two minutes of the pose. I wish I'd started this way sooner so that I could render more with the colors, but oh well.

This is another painting is from the summer of 2007, right around the time I started this Blog. This was also the last time Martina modeled at the Society of Illustrators. This was at the time, and still is, one of my favorite paintings I ever did. It has its flaws, some due to drawing errors and some due to the 20 minute pose restraints, but they don't diminish my affection toward the piece.

This is another piece done at the Haven Arts Gallery in the Bronx. Same night as the last one I posted with the same problem of not having my usual colors. In this case, the colors add mood to the painting, accentuating the turmoil of the brush strokes and the pose itself. I don't want to impose my interpretation on what the model was actually thinking or feeling while posing, but I feel the colors add to the melancholy of the pose.

This was another piece painted outside of the Society even though the model is the same. Sandro la Ferla, a great watercolorist and a patron of the Society Jazz & Sketch sessions invited me to his Tribeca studio to paint Tatiana in a different environment. He was incredibly generous and even treated me to lunch of traditional Italian bread, cured meats and cheeses. And lucky for me, this lunch-time pick-me-up helped me get into the groove while drawing outside my element.

This piece was done in late 2006 at the Haven Arts Gallery in the Bronx. Haven Arts would host free figure drawing sessions every Thursday night, along with free wine and cheese. It was one of the best deals in town. And Jen was one of the best models. She would get into really difficult poses and hold them for 20 to 40 minutes. This was one of those nights where I ran out of some of my regular colors and had to use substitutes, hence the pale violet color in the shadow areas. I'm not sure what I did to get to this color but it did include a lot of white gouache.

This is another one from the Drawing Studio in Long Island. This was done with a sharpened stick dipped in ink. Jeff sharpened it to mimic a pen nib and gave me a try. Unfortunately I'm heavy handed and ended up breaking the nib. It made great marks that I have not been able to replicate no matter how hard I tried. Sorry Jeff.

I'm starting March off with drawings from my archive. Partially because I'm a little behind on new work due to other deadlines. Most of the drawings I'll post in the next couple of days were done outside of the Society of Illustrators Jazz & Sketch session. And some, like this one of Tiffany, are more on the experimental side.

I drew this at the Drawing Studio in Long Island. Jeff Fisher likes to make you go out of your comfort zone and try new materials and techniques. A lot of them turn out to be complete disasters, but what most consider to be failures are great teaching tools for work done later. For this piece I used both hands at the same time. This is a tough exercise that requires a lot of concentration. I'm sure I cheated a number of times in the duration of the pose. My trick was to pre-plan the mark for one hand while focusing on the contours made with the other hand. Other times I let the"idle" hand make the back and forth "shading" marks while the other hand was the focus of my attention. I came away from this exercise with a greater ability to focus on the marks I was making and their relationship to what I was observing.
