This painting is from Spring 2006. It was a very busy night at the Society of Illustrators. Syd Mead was lecturing to a packed audience downstairs in the gallery. Upstairs we were having our Third Thursday festivities. And further up in the library the board meeting was letting up. All in all there must have been at least 300 people at the SoI that night. I didn't plan on drawing but because there was no room at the Mead lecture, I ended up finding a little corner and some space to do a little sketching. Then good ol'e Jeff Fisher grabbed me by the neck, threw me in his seat, and handed me a really fun water-soluble pencil. It had a waxy texture and felt more like an oil pastel. The water activated the pigment a little yet still kept the integrity of the line. Unfortunately I don't think they make these types of pencils anymore.

I wish I had this pose in early January when I was working on a painting "Underneath It All" (to reference the hips and the ribcage). I used photos for reference, but they don't work for me as well as good old fashioned observational drawing.

I ran out of some of my regular colors that I use for my Blacks (Sepia and Cerulean Blue) and was too lazy to refill them, even though I had taken out the tubes with every intention to. I ended up improvising, using a combination of Ultramarine Blue, Permanent Carmine and English Venetian Red.

I painted this about two weeks ago at the Society of Illustrators Jazz & Sketch. This was a turning point for me. For the last several months I've been struggling to create something that I truly appreciated. It seemed like I had been moving backwards skill-wise instead of improving. Every artist goes through this (the dreaded "Funk"). My solution has always been to relax and stop worrying about the outcome. And that particular night I decided to take my own advice. With a loose grip on my pencil I quickly sketched in the male figure and the rest of the painting kind of came together. I do wish I had a little more time to define the hands before the models moved on to the next pose.

Yes, the model's name (burlesque stage name) is Legs Malone. And rightfully so; She had some long legs on her. Unfortunately, I found that out at the end of the night after forgetting to include said legs in this painting.

This painting is from a session at the Spring Street Studio in December 2005. They have 3-hour sessions every day from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM. It was the only time I made it out there. The Society of Illustrators closed for winter break and I needed my life drawing fix. Although lots of people head out to Spring Street because of their flexible schedules, it is a completely different atmosphere from SoI; something I was not completely comfortable with.
